2014 Symphony Under the Stars
The Season Opener of the New World Symphony is a big deal in Miami Beach cultural circles, and Saturday October 11 was no exception. Charismatic conductor Michael Tilson Thomas led an ambitious and unconventional program of 20th century works. Inside the Frank Gehry-designed New World Center, musicians mingled with dancers under a jazz-age video montage. And on the outside, CU alums enjoyed the sights and sounds of the concert while relaxing on the lawn, with the aid of a 7,000 square foot projection wall, an outdoor sound system, wine and potluck dinner.Read more
Peter Awn, professor of Islamic and Comparative Religion and Dean of the School of General Studies at Columbia University visited Miami recently and gave a fascinating lecture on the future of Political Islam. Columbia University Alumni attended a reading by Jessica Alexander ('04 SIPA) of her latest book, "Chasing Chaos: My Decade In and Out of Humanitarian Aid" at Books and Books. It was a great opportunity to hear about her international development work in Africa, Asia and the Americas (Haiti) with various NGOs and the United Nations System.Read more
The Lions were out in force for another year of Art Basel Miami. Hundreds turned out to enjoy the exhibits, mingle at the various events, and to support our more then 60 fellow alums who displayed their work around the city. It was a great way to wrap up 2013 and ramp up for the new year.
