Illuminating Our Future

Celebrating The Columbia Campaign and Our Future

The Columbia Campaign came to a close on December 31, 2013, and the University’s future is brighter than ever. In every area of study within the University and every pursuit in the common interest beyond it, Columbia and Columbians are moving forward with renewed energy. LAACU Creates Endowed Scholarship and Awards Florida Native

The Latino Alumni Association of Columbia University (LAACU) Scholarship Fund raised $151,187 to establish an endowed scholarship in just five years! Not only did it set a fundraising record for LAACU, but it joined the historic Columbia Campaign that set an Ivy League record for funds with $6.1 billion raised in a single campaign and the second largest sum raised by any university. LAACU received over 450 gifts from 315 alumni to establish the LAACU Scholarship.

LAACU’s decision to endow a scholarship to live in perpetuity at Columbia College means that it will help Columbia students achieve their dreams for generations. Since 2010, LAACU has awarded seven students scholarships, playing a small role in their success, and that number will only continue to grow.

Carolina Garrigo ’15CC is once again the LAACU Scholarship recipient. She is of Cuban descent and, when not at Columbia, calls Florida home. Now a junior, Carolina is closer to her goal of becoming a screenwriter or film editor. She is currently interning at Jane Street Entertainment, a television production company, learning about all aspects of production including research and post production. She continues to be involved on campus with theatre arts, and is not only the stage manager for productions, but is also exploring directing. Carolina is also a member of Sigma Delta Tau sorority, where she participates in community service and the sorority’s annual Greek Beats show highlighting the talents of all fraternity and sorority members on campus.

According to Columbia University President, Lee C. Bollinger, "more than $1 billion has been raised for student financial aid across our schools. Close to $1 billion in capital funding has been dedicated to 40 different facilities projects, which will make their presence felt on the Morningside campus, at the Medical Center, at our Baker Athletics Complex, at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, and, most significantly, on our new 17-acre campus in West Harlem, in an area by the Hudson River known as Manhattanville."
